ATL Security Update

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Those of you who use Visual Studio in daily work have probably noticed there is has been new security update issued for Active Template Library. The Channel 9 also published very interesting webcast in which three engineers from Microsoft explain what’s inside the update for ATL.

Developers who have built controls using vulnerable versions of ATL should take immediate action to review and identify any vulnerabilities, modify and recompile their affected controls and components using the updated versions of ATL and finally distribute a non-vulnerable version of the controls and components to their customers.

Along with security fixes, the update includes one more interesting feature. Damien Watkins announced (12 min 20 sec) that now:

you can include ATL as a kind of header only implementation

I suppose, it may make it easier to port ATL features to development environments produced by parties like MinGW, so users of these will likely be able to use Windows Template Library (WTL) based on ATL. I’m dreaming, am I?

Marble on the Planet

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I’d like to welcome new member of the Planet OSGeoTorsten Rahn’s blog about Marble – educational project from KDE. I believe the Marble project somehow complements the mission of the Planet and as Torsten wrote in his e-mail requesting syndication:

It deals almost exclusively with our Free Software project Marble and promotion of FLOSS GIS and open map content.

So, welcome!

First Climbing in Portland

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Last Saturday, Pantera, my friend Roger and I, we spent a wonderful day on the Isle of Portland.

Thanks to Pantera, we have collected quite a nice photo & video log from during the trip including walking, swimming, climbing, soloing (DWS), eating and sleeping. All the stuff available on my Flickr

It was my first time in Portland and I’ll definitely come back there.

Do what you love…

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Philosophy of the day year:

Do what you love. Love what you do. Take less. Give more. Never quit. Never follow. Be passionate. Be bold. Be honest. Respect people. Respect the environment. Always bring out the best in your family and friends. Change is the only constant. Fear is an illusion. Attitude is everything.

I’m a user of Pentax hardware and I like reading Joel Cornuzblog dedicated to Linux & Photography and Pentax too. I was amazed how similar Joel’s and mine Linux stories are:

I have also been using Linux for quite some years (starting in the days where having an up and running X server was a good week of hard work?) and have since then tried to use Linux for photography ? these days, I run Ubuntu for it?s ease of use.

I still remember the times when I was staying at my past employer office (nearly) every Friday overnight to download, install and learn Linux and programming. That days, I could only dream about broadband at home. The time is running so too fast!
